Last Conversations with Yéye

weimemoryoral-history

In the spring of 2018 I sat with Yéye every Thursday afternoon with a recorder and a notebook. He was seventy-eight and tired, but his stories were sharp.

He talked about the freighter. The coffee tin. The napkin with Carmen's number. The night Elena was born and he cried in the hospital parking lot because he finally believed the promise to his mother had been kept.

He asked me to write things down so the little ones would know. Noah was thirteen then and still thought grandparents were permanent. Lucas was already filming everything.

Yéye died the following winter. These pages — this whole Heirloom — are what he asked for. I hope we are doing it justice.
